Queen Mathilde of the Belgians has quietly established herself amongst her peers. While she does not get as much press as other royals, she is dedicated to her role. King Philippe and Queen Mathilde have attended and hosted numerous diplomatic events and engagements this year, and Mathilde has shown that she can hold her own when it comes to fashion.
Armani Privé Gown, Brussels (April 2024)
When Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg visited in April, Mathilde wore a beautiful blush pink coat and dress from Christian Dior to welcome the couple in the morning. It was her look for the State Dinner that stole the show, though.
The Belgian queen wore a light blue Armani Privé long-sleeved gown from the SS24 collection, with the colouring pairing perfectly with her hair.
She wore the historic Nine Provinces Tiara to compliment the sparkle of her gown. The tiara originally belonged to Princess Astrid of Sweden who received it as a wedding gift from the Belgian people when she married the future King Leopold III. The Art-Deco tiara has a meander base and nine large diamonds with a diamond arch above each. Mathilde also wore a newer favourite, the Graff Foliage Diamond Necklace.
Jenny Packham Gown, Brussels (May 2024)
Queen Mathilde is the Royal Patron of the Queen Elisabeth Competition, a non-profit musical competition. She annually attends the rounds of the competition. For 2024, the competition was for violinists and both she and King Philippe attended the opening round of the competition.
Mathilde turned to a favoured royal designer, Jenny Packham, for the evening. She wore the Sungem Gown from the fashion house in a striking red. The sequined floor-length gown features cap-sleeves and a bateau neckline. Both the sequins and the colour make this a bold choice but the Belgian queen more than delivered on this look.
Red Christian Dior Suit, Paris (October 2024)
Red is Queen Mathilde’s colour of 2024. For the Belgian State Visit to France in October, she wore a burgundy suit from Christian Dior. A suitably French fashion house, she chose it for her visit to the Opéra Garnier with French First Lady Birgitte Macron.
The red wool suit beautifully echoed Dior’s 1947 Bar Suit- the puffed sleeves emphasised the shoulders, a nipped waist, and a full skirt call back to the iconic Dior look. She also completed the look with another Christian Dior icon, the Lady Dior handbag, as well as Dior pumps.
This understated queen knows exactly how to dress for her role.
