Princess Délphine to release new documentary about her life on Belgian TV

Delphine Boel

Princess Délphine made her debut as a member of the Belgian Royal Family in October of 2020 when she was officially recognised as King Albert II’s daughter and granted the title of Princess.

And now, less than two years later, she is set to tell her own side of the story.

Belgian television chain VRT is scheduled to release a documentary in three episodes titled “Delphine: mijn verhaal” (“Délphine: my story”), in which Belgium’s newest Princess will talk about different moments in her life that marked her, as well as showing photographs and some of her art pieces.

The first episode will be broadcast on the 12th of January 2022 on VRT One, with the second and third to follow over the following two weeks.

The documentary will also feature her partner, her mother, friends, lawyers, palace staff and members of her art sphere.

This will not be the Princess’s first television appearance either; she is currently competing on Belgium’s version of Dancing with the Stars, much to the surprise of the entire nation. It is the first time that a member of the Royal Family appears on such a television show. Her Royal Highness is still in the competition after two couples were already eliminated. She and her partner Sander Bos qualified 7th on the first night, 3rd on the second night and 4th (with a tie for 2nd place) on the third night.

This newest television adventure is set to make headlines in Belgium and in royal news around the world, as, given the guest list, it is expected that more is going to be revealed about King Albert and Baroness Sybille’s story and the lengthy legal battle that Délphine fought to be recognised as Albert’s daughter.

The former King of the Belgians denied for years that he was the girl’s father, and, because of his status as King, he could not be brought to court. However, everything changed when he abdicated the throne in favour of his son Philippe in 2013. Délphine requested a DNA paternity test and had to fight her way through the legal system to obtain one; the lack of legal protections for King Albert meant that she had at least a shot. And she managed to obtain it, proving that King Albert was indeed her biological father.

That proof came in October of 2020, and since then, Princess Délphine has been incorporated into royal life little by little, gaining acceptance even from Queen Paola, who was present for the first meeting between King Albert and her daughter after he granted her the title of Princess that belongs to every offspring of a monarch, according to Belgian law.
