King Charles has arrived at Buckingham Palace ahead of a day of significant constitutional importance as the United Kingdom prepares for the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
His Majesty travelled from Highgrove House in Gloucestershire to the Palace on Monday morning, where he will carry out one of the Sovereign’s most important constitutional duties.
The King is due to receive Sir Keir Starmer, who will formally tender his resignation as Prime Minister during a private audience.
Following Sir Keir’s departure, Andy Burnham will arrive at Buckingham Palace to meet The King. During a second audience, His Majesty will invite the newly elected Labour leader to form a government, officially making him Prime Minister.
The carefully choreographed sequence of events is a long-established constitutional convention, ensuring the seamless transfer of power between administrations.
Mr Burnham will become the fourth Prime Minister appointed by King Charles since the beginning of his reign in September 2022, following Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer.
After accepting The King’s invitation to form a government, Mr Burnham will travel to 10 Downing Street, where he is expected to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister before beginning the task of appointing his Cabinet.
