Prince Charles condemns Putin’s ”brutal aggression”

Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales

Prince Charles has become the first member of the British Royal Family to directly comment on the war in Ukraine, calling Russia’s actions “unconscionable”.

Speaking at an event in Southend-on-sea, the heir to the throne called Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a “brutal aggression”.

Charles was in Southend to officially grant the town city status following the killing of MP Sir David Amess last October.

He called Sir David’s death “a terrible tragedy” adding that it was “an attack on democracy.”

He then went on to draw parallels to the situation in Ukraine.

The Prince said: “We are seeing those same values under attack today in Ukraine in the most unconscionable way.

“In the stand we take here, we are in solidarity with all those who are resisting brutal aggression.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had previously posted a message on Twitter expressing their solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

The comments from the Prince of Wales was a major step up, however, with The Royal Family usually being very careful not to criticise another sovereign nation.
