Now that the much talked about three-day state visit of US President Donald Trump to the UK has concluded, you can look at The Queen’s diplomacy in a programme on True Royalty called “Queen Elizabeth II, The Diplomat Queen.”
The 51-minute documentary, released in 2012, focused on former state visits by America’s presidents and was directed by Christian Bidault.
True Royalty describes the documentary on their site, “In the Royal diary, nothing is more important than state visits, which for a thousand years have symbolised diplomacy at the highest level (some visits perhaps requiring more diplomacy than others!) The Queen has met all 12 presidents of the US serving during her reign and now prepares to meet the latest.”
It opens with President Obama saying, “What The Queen symbolises not just to Great Britain and the entire Commonwealth, and obviously the entire world is the best of England.”
See The Queen meeting President Obama at Buckingham Palace and her first state visit to the United States under President Dwight D. Eisenhower “Ike” in October 1957 where she was welcomed by thousands in a parade in New York City and Washington D.C.
Only three US presidents have undertaken state visits to the United Kingdom: President George W. Bush (2003), President Barack Obama (2011), and President Donald Trump (2019).
The Queen has met 11 of the 12 presidents of the United States with President Lydon B. Johnson being the exception. He became president after President John F. Kennedy’s 1963 assassination and served from 1963-1969.
