Princess Anne begins two-day visit to the Isle of Wight

AnnePrincess Anne has arrived on the Isle of Wight, to begin a two-day visit to the Island.

The Princess Royal’s visit coincides with the Island’s popular yachting festival ‘Cowes Week,’ and Anne’s trip will see her undertake several engagements in Cowes.

During her first-day, the Princess visited a brand-new Scout Camp Centre. The Mattinson Centre, is a new building costing £190,000, which has been named after  David Mattinson, whose wife, Julia, passed away in April, after they raised much of the funds for the building.

Anne, who is a former girl guide, seemed pleased to meet members of the Isle of Wight Scouts who lined up to wait for the royal arrival. The Princess met Bear Grylls’ mother Lady Grylls and Imogen-Baden Powell, whose great-uncle was the man behind the scout movement.

The mother of Peter and Zara Phillips then moved on to the award-winning Earl Mountbatten Hospice, which is the only hospice on the island which provides palliative care to members of the community, where a plaque was unveiled to commemorate her visit.

Later, she met with volunteers at the Classic Boat Museum in East Cowes. The Royal’s visit to the Island has been met with excitement and earlier this month, the Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White revealed he was looking forward to Anne’s arrival.

“We are looking forward to welcome The Princess Royal back to the Island this August,” Major General Martin said. “This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the valuable work of organisations and volunteers who contribute so much to Island life.”
