With the second royal wedding of the year less than two weeks away, excitement is starting to build. Of course, one of the most buzzed-about items at a royal wedding is the dress.
The designer is never announced until the day, but one detail we know for sure is that Princess Eugenie will wear a British designer. “I’m not telling anyone who is making it, but I can say it is a British-based designer,” Eugenie said in a recent interview.
One I think most of us will agree to throw out of contention is Clare Waight Keller for Givenchy. It seems rather unlikely Eugenie would walk down the same aisle wearing the same designer as the Duchess of Sussex. And although others have speculated that Stella McCartney could be the one, I don’t think Eugenie would want to duplicate the designer Meghan chose for her reception gown.
So who could the lucky British fashion house be?
Erdem
Princess Eugenie wore an Erdem dress for her official engagement photo and has worn the designer on many other occasions. Erdem was widely speculated to be one of the frontrunners for Meghan’s gown. Obviously, that wasn’t the case, but could Erdem be the choice for Eugenie? She’s already a firm fan and Erdem Moralioglu is a designer who definitely pushes boundaries with his bold florals. Since Eugenie’s style is edgier than some of the other members of the royal family, this might be a match made in heaven.
Victoria Beckham
The bride-to-be and her fiancé allegedly hired the Beckham’s party planner to help with the wedding, and it’s assumed the Beckhams will attend, as they did for the Cambridges and the Sussexes. But there’s always the possibility that Victoria Beckham designed Eugenie’s dress, too. Her designs would certainly suit Princess Eugenie’s fresh and modern style.
Burberry
Princess Eugenie has worn Burberry designs over the years, and as a fan of the brand perhaps she’d want to work with their new creative director, Riccardo Tisci. His designs are sexy yet classy, and his contemporary looks would make a wonderful pick for Princess Eugenie. In fact, Tisci counts the bride’s grandmother, The Queen, as his muse. “I’d die if I met the Queen, it is my dream!” he told the Evening Standard in a recent interview. Maybe he’ll get his chance this month.
Vivienne Westwood
As someone who isn’t scared to wear fashion on the more avant-garde side, Princess Eugenie might very well have chosen the quirky designer. Westwood dressed Eugenie for the royal wedding in 2011, so perhaps she’ll call on her again? Featuring frills, corsets, and intricate details, the aesthetic of her autumn winter 18/19 collection definitely does not seem out of character for a bride like Eugenie.
Ralph & Russo
This was another designer heavily favored for Meghan’s gown. And since Princess Eugenie and her cousin Harry’s wife share a quite similar taste in fashion (such as wearing the same Misha Nonoo skirt at separate events recently) it would not be surprising for her to choose Ralph & Russo for her wedding. Their dramatic, embellished eveningwear, like the gown the Duchess of Sussex wore in her engagement photos, would be a stunning choice for Eugenie.
Alexander McQueen
A firm favorite of the royal family, McQueen would be a good (albeit safe) bet for the next royal wedding. Princess Eugenie has been photographed wearing the label in the past, including a red cowlneck dress similar to Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid dress. But would Princess Eugenie want to wear the same designer as her cousin-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge? It’s been long enough between weddings, but the comparisons that would inevitably ensue make me think Eugenie wants to go her own way. Still, we can’t count McQueen’s Sarah Burton completely out of the running.
Alice Temperley
The British fashion house is no stranger to dressing royals, including the Duchess of Cambridge. While Temperley’s floaty, feminine gowns with floral embellishments would look amazing in St George’s Chapel, I could absolutely see Princess Eugenie choosing a Temperley design to hit the dance floor at her reception.
Of course, the bride-to-be might surprise us all and choose a designer who is off all of our radars. If I was forced to place a bet, I’d be throwing half my money down on Erdem and the other half on Burberry. But until 12 October, it’s anyone’s guess.
