<![CDATA[Princess Eugenie of York was in the Royal box at
Wimbledon this afternoon watching her tennis-playing namesake
Eugenie Bouchard from Canada take on Petra Kvitova in the women's
grandslam finals on centre court.
Joined by long-term
boyfriend Jack Brooksbank on her left and along with the wife
of the Chairman of the All England Club, Gill Brook on her right,
the decision for Her Royal Highness to attend the match was an
almost last-minute one after Princess Eugenie heard that the tennis
star had wanted to meet her, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Bouchard’s mother – a life-long royal fan – named her twin
daughters after the York princesses (with Eugenie’s sister being
named Beatrice) and a brother called William. Princess Eugenie
attends the match today to lend her support to the 20-year-old who
this year made history as the first Canadian to make it to the
singles Grand Slam final.
Despite this unexpected royal attendance, the Canadian tennis
player didn’t manage to beat her Czech opponent. Princess Eugenie’s
role was only as a spectator and it will be the Duke of Kent,
Princess Eugenie’s cousin, who will present the trophy to the
winner as President of the All England Club, a duty he has
undertaken since taking up the presidency in 1969 from his mother
Princess Marina.
There was no curtseying to the royal box either after the Duke of
Kent asked for the practice to stop in 2003 with the exception of
when The Queen and Prince of Wales are present.
Princess Eugenie is currently back in the UK from her job in New
York at the auction house Paddle8, according to reports the
Princess will be part of the organisations’s effort to setup a UK
branch of the business.
Meanwhile, Princess Eugenie’s sister Beatrice
is reportedly attending the wedding of Prince Amedeo
of Belgium to Lili Rosboch in Rome today as a friend of the
couple.
