Princess Beatrice walks the red carpet at the Met Gala

The annual Met Gala was held in New York last night, and royalty joined the best of the fashion and celebrity world as they walked down the red carpet.

Princess Beatrice, the grand-daughter of Queen Elizabeth, joined in the fun taking to this year’s theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination for the Met Gala held on the first Monday of May annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

She was dressed in an ethereal deep purple gown, black box clutch and a headband-style tiara.

Beatrice has been known for her unique fashion choices in the past, most notably her hat worn at the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s 2011 wedding.

She has also been invited to her cousin, Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in less than two weeks time and anticipation to see what creation she comes up with is mounting. The affair is smaller this time, and Princess Beatrice is older, so she may decide to go down with a simpler, more classic look.

Princess Beatrice isn’t the first member of the British Royal Family to attend the Met Gala. In 1996, Diana, Princess of Wales, stunned in a Navy Dior slip dress and pearl choker necklace.

Other members of royal families are big fans of the Met Gala, too. Queen Rania of Jordan, Princess Maria-Olympia of Greece and Monaco’s Princess Caroline’s daughter, Charlotte Casiraghi, have all attended in the past.

This year, Charlotte Casiraghi attended again styled very different from Princess Beatrice. She instead opted for an embellished black mini dress by Anthony Vaccarello.

Highlights of the Met Gala were Actress Blake Lively’s dress that took over 600 hours to create and Rhianna’s creation by Maison Margiela Artisanal. However, Frances McDormand stole the show in a robin egg blue Valentino cape and over-the-top Philip Treacy headpiece.
