Who’s expected at King Carl Gustaf’s Golden Jubilee celebrations?

The King and Queen of Spain on a State Visit to Sweden

King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Golden Jubilee celebrations will take place later this month, but who can we expect to see celebrating alongside the monarch?

The King will be joined by his wife, Queen Silvia, and their children and spouses: Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia and Princess Madeleine and Chris O’Neill. His sisters, Princess Margaretha, Princess Desiree, Princess Birgitta and Princess Christina, are also expected. Nieces, nephews and brother-in-law will also be expected at the celebrations.

Don’t be surprised to see his grandchildren (Princess Estelle, Prince Oscar, Prince Alexander, Prince Gabriel, Prince Julian, Princess Leonore, Prince Nicolas and Princess Adrienne) also make appearances.

Outside of Sweden, representatives from foreign monarchies are expected to attend as they did for Queen Margrethe of Denmark’s celebrations last year.

The Scandinavian monarchies are very close. Not only are they closely related, they are good friends as well. Queen Margrethe of Denmark and King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway (as long as the King’s health allows) are almost certain attendees. Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is the godson of King Carl Gustaf, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him there alongside his parents.

Besides Scandinavia, other monarchies that could send representatives include Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of the Belgians, Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain could represent their countries. The big question is who the British Royal Family would send. Would King Charles go himself or send his heir, the Prince of Wales? Or will he send his brother and sister-in-law, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, like his mother usually did to such events?

As the big day gets closer, confirmation of the guest list will be released.
