The Prince and Princess of Wales host surprise party to mark 75th anniversary of the NHS

The Prince and Princess of Wales hosted a surprise party to mark the 75th anniversary of the NHS at the wellbeing garden of St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

Wednesday, 5 July, marks the 75th anniversary of the NHS, and Their Royal Highnesses arrived early to help set up for the party – including setting the tables and finishing off the birthday cake.

The royals attended the NHS Big Tea Party hosted by NHS Charities Together, of which they are patrons, alongside television presenter Mel Giedroy and representatives of the workforce and patients over the past 75 years.

William and Catherine spoke to guests, including Aneira Thomas, who was the first baby born on NHS and pioneers in research. Windrush generation Blanche Hines was also in attendance with three generations of her family.

The Prince and Princess made sure to discuss the current challenges the NHS is facing and thanked them for all that they have done and continue to do.

Their Royal Highnesses also sent a video message to the NHS to mark the anniversary, stating: “Wishing everyone a very happy 75th birthday for the NHS. Thank you so much for all you do.”

Regarding the visit, the Chief Executive of NHS Charities Together, Ellie Orton OBE, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to our Royal Patrons, and everyone who’s helped celebrate the 75th anniversary of our beloved NHS this year. As the national charity caring for the NHS, NHS Charities Together is here for anyone who wants to give something back to its people, who all give so much to us, and that extra support has never been so important. It includes providing staff psychologists, counselling, peer support training and so much more.

“It’s not too late to arrange your own NHS Big Tea party and raise vital funds to support NHS charities – find out how you can get involved at nhscharitiestogether.co.uk.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales have been patrons of NHS Charities Together since December 2020. This is the sixth year of the NHS Big Tea Party that brings together the UK to provide needed support to staff, patients and volunteers.
