Prince William’s office condemns his godmother following racism storm

Prince William’s official spokesperson has condemned racially insensitive comments made to a charity founder by his godmother Lady Susan Hussey.

During an event at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, Ngozi Fulani was questioned about her background by the Lady Of The Household.

Ms Fulani said she was “totally stunned” the remarks made by Prince William’s godmother.

Speaking to journalists in Boston ahead of the Earthshot Prize, the spokesperson to the Prince of Wales said the comments “were unacceptable.”

The spokesman said: “This is a matter for Buckingham Palace, but as the Prince of Wales’s spokesperson, I appreciate you’re all here and understand you’ll want to ask about it.

“So let me address it head on – I was really disappointed to hear about the guests experience at Buckingham Palace last night.

“Obviously, I wasn’t there, but racism has no place in our society.

“The comments were unacceptable, and it is right that the individual has stepped aside with immediate effect.”

Lady Susan Hussey, who one of the late Queen Elizabeth’s closest aides and confidants for over 60 years, resigned from her honorary position after the claims were made public by Ms Fulani.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “We take this incident extremely seriously and have investigated immediately to establish the full details.

“In this instance, unacceptable and deeply regrettable comments have been made. We have reached out to Ngozi Fulani on this matter, and are inviting her to discuss all elements of her experience in person if she wishes.

“In the meantime, the individual concerned would like to express her profound apologies for the hurt caused and has stepped aside from her honorary role with immediate effect.

“All members of the household are being reminded of the diversity and inclusivity policies which they are required to uphold at all times.”
