Prince & Princess of Wales

A hug for Wimbledon runner up on dramatic day on Centre Court

The Princess of Wales returned to Wimbledon as Patron for the Ladies’ Final, and she shared a touching moment with runner-up Ons Jabeur.

Unseeded Czech player Marketa Vondrousova won 6-4, 6-4 at her first Ladies’ Final at Wimbledon. Vondrousova was unable to play at Wimbledon last year and was forced to watch from the sidelines with an injury, making her title that much more meaningful.

Tunisian runner up Ons Jabeur was understandably upset at her loss, as this is the second year in a row that she has lost in the finals at Wimbledon.

The Princess of Wales consoled Jabeur by rubbing her arm and offering the tearful player a hug, much like when The Duchess of Kent gave Jana Novotna a big hug when she lost in 1993.

Jabeur said The Princess asked if she could give her a hug, and the pair chatted afterwards.

The Tunisian player later revealed that the Princess had said to her “Same thing after last year: to encourage me to be strong, to come back and win a Grand Slam, win a Wimbledon.”
