The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall visit Nigeria

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are on the last leg of their visit to West Africa with a final stop in Nigeria. The programme for this day had been altered after deadly clashes in the area around the city of Jos raised security fears. The Prince of Wales was said to be disappointed that he was unable to make the trip to Jos. However, the events were moved to Abuja, where the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were welcomed yesterday morning. It is the Prince of Wales’s fourth visit to Nigeria, following visits in 1990, 1999 and 2006.

Meanwhile, the Duchess of Cornwall met with children who were taking part in a literary workshop at the Salamander Café in Abuja. The workshop is part of a series of events that hopes to encourage children to participate in The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. Several Nigerian and British authors who are a part of the Abuja Literary Society read out some of their work. Afterwards, the Duchess of Cornwall joined in a discussion of ideas for a Women of the World Festival which is to be held in Nigeria. “Women get together to discuss things that matter to them, so I think especially here in Nigeria it is a fantastic place to start. I can see there are some very powerful ladies around here who could get it going so I will leave it in your hands and hope that next time I come back we will find a WOW festival going on”, The Duchess of Cornwall said in a speech.

At the end of the day, the Prince and Duchess attended a reception at the British High Commissioner’s Residence.
