The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are to visit Salisbury later this month to show their support following the nerve agent attack involving a former Russian spy and his daughter.
Sergei and Yulia Skripal were found unconscious on a park bench back in March. The pair were taken to Salisbury District Hospital along with Detective Sergeant Nick Bailey, sparking an investigation which is still ongoing. All three have since been released from hospital.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will meet local residents before attending a reception for those playing an active role in helping Salisbury get back on its feet. This includes emergency services, civic dignitaries, local and national agencies, and representatives for business, marketing, arts and culture.
Local leaders in Salisbury have been encouraging tourists and shoppers to return to the city following the re-opening of the shopping centre which was closed for 11 weeks whilst the inquiry took place.
It was revealed that the overall investigation is expected to cost Wiltshire Police £7.5 million, with 2,300 objects taken from the scene and 900 witness statements taken. The bench where the Skripals were found will not be replaced but a piece of art may be installed in the spot.
Alistair Cunningham, chair of the recovery coordinating group, said: “Whilst the recovery work is well under way, there is still a lot to be done and this visit is a real boost for the city.
“Everyone here is so pleased that their royal highnesses have decided to visit and I am sure that local residents and visitors will join us to welcome them to the city centre and to celebrate this special royal visit.”
Russia has been accused by the Government for the attack but Moscow has repeatedly denied all responsibility of the incident.
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will be in Salisbury on the 22nd June.
