The Prince of Wales was embraced by Romanian children as he walked the streets of Bucharest on Friday.
Embed from Getty ImagesPrince Charles, who is a frequent visitor to Romania, was being given a guided tour of the city – viewing restoration work on the old buildings.
On a walkabout, 11-year-old Valentin Blacker ran up to the heir to the throne and hugged him. This is not the first time the young boy has met Prince Charles, as he regularly visits Romania in a private capacity.
The Queen’s eldest son is dedicated to the preservation of Romanian rural communities and has been working to improve the country.
In 2006, he bought and restored an 18th Century Saxon house in the Transylvanian village Viscri, the latter a chosen UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Charles then purchased a property in the village of Zalánpatak in 2010. The property was founded four centuries ago by the Kálnoky Family as a glass manufacturing area in the centre of the forest.
Charles has previously said: “Ever since I first visited Romania in 1998, I have been doing my utmost to ensure a sustainable future for the Saxon villages of Transylvania and their people. Tourism clearly has a vital role to play in this.”
Romania is the first of many stops on The Prince’s nine-day tour of Europe. Over the next few days, he will travel to Austria, Italy and The Holy See.
The Duchess of Cornwall was unable to travel to Romania. However, she will be joining her husband as they visit the other three countries.

As some of your readers may know, the British and Romanian royal families (the latter not reigning but still very present in public life) are, albeit distantly, related.
This confirms the integrity, decency and worthiness of this man! He has had the foresight and perspicacity to highlight the need for integration and appreciation of races, and peoples. He has highlighted the need to preserve and conserve the old while advancing and creating the new, He is a very wise and intelligent man.
Even at 11, Valentin is wise. He hid his neck from the Prince. He obviously knows Charles is related to Dracula. Smart lad. But there’s a priest at the ready with a cross if needed.
