Diana Dresses Sell For Over £850,000

Today, 10 dresses went on sale. Among the incredible lots up for sale were a midnight-blue velvet evening gown worn to a state dinner at The White House, the very night of Diana’s memorable dance with John Travolta, and a Catherine Walker Mughal-inspired lavishly embroidered gown and bolero, with prices ranging from £30,000 to £300,000.

The dress that Diana wore when dancing with John Travolta raised a staggering £240,000 ($362,424).

The blue gown was sold to an anonymous male bidder whom the auctioneer remarked, “has never bought a dress before in his life”. The dress went to the anonymous bidder who, it is reported, wanted to “buy it as a surprise to cheer up his wife”.

The actual total figure which the dresses sold for was £862,800.

During the auction itself, the dress did not attract extra bids and auctioneer Kerry Taylor struck her hammer at £200,000 – although the auction house said the dress eventually sold for £240,000.
