
The final Prime Minister of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II has quit – just six weeks into her tenure.
Liz Truss confirmed her tenure is coming to an end in a brief statement outside 10 Downing Street at lunchtime on October 20th 2022.
She said she had already informed The King of her resignation. Charles III will appoint a Prime Minister for the first time before the end of October 2022.
Liz Truss is and will be the shortest serving Prime Minister in British history – her time in office is currently just 45 days. The previous record was held by George Canning who was Prime Minister for 119 days during the reign of King George IV. His died in office.
Liz Truss was appointed Prime Minister by Queen Elizabeth II on September 6th 2022, just two days before the death of Her Late Majesty.
She was the fifteenth Prime Minister of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the first of the rule of King Charles III.
A leadership election will take place with a replacement chosen by Conservative MPs. They will take office next week.
