The regal meaning behind the name of Princess Charlotte’s beloved pet

Brand new photos of the children of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have become an expected treat for royal fans in recent years. William and Kate didn’t disappoint as their daughter, Princess Charlotte, turned seven. But they also had a surprise to share as they revealed more details about another member of their family, their new dog.

The princess is seen cuddling the Cambridge pet in one of the images taken by the Duchess of Cambridge in Norfolk just days before her birthday. And it’s been revealed that the four legged friend of the fourth in line to the throne is called Orla.

It’s a rather regal pick. Orla is an Irish name and comes from the word ‘or’ meaning gold and ”fhlaith’ which is translated as prince or princess making the new royal pooch a ‘golden princess’.

Orla is the second pet that Charlotte has had for company in her seven years. She arrived when her parents still had Lupo, the black cocker spaniel given to them by Kate’s mum and dad, Carole and Michael Middleton. The dog, whose name meant wolf, was a big part of Cambridge family life for nine years with his death announced by William and Kate on their Instagram in November 2020.

The Duchess’ brother, James Middleton, gave them Orla as a puppy, just before Lupo’s death. However, her name had remained a secret, until now.

As one princess celebrates a special birthday, her beloved pet has been revealed to have a rather regal name of her own.
