The Queen to appoint new Prime Minister at Balmoral today

Liz Truss Queen

The Queen will appoint the fifteenth Prime Minister of her reign at Balmoral later today.

Her Majesty will receive Liz Truss, newly elected leader of the Conservative Party, and ask her to form a government.

Just moments before, The Queen will receive the outgoing Prime Minister, Boris Johnson when he will formally tender his resignation.

Liz Truss was announced as the new leader of the Conservatives on September 5th 2022 following a vote of the party’s members over the summer, triggered by Mr Johnson’s announcement that he was stepping down. She took 81,326 of the ballots cast against 60,399 for her opponent, Rishi Sunak.

It’s the first time that The Queen will appoint a new Prime Minister at her Scottish home. Buckingham Palace announced last week that Her Majesty would remain at Balmoral, rather than make an almost 1,000 mile round trip between there and London, for the meetings. Officials said it was to avoid any uncertainty.

Mr Johnson is due to meet Her Majesty after 11am on September 6th. The Queen’s audience with Ms Truss, when the invitation to form a government will be given, is due to begin just after noon. A symbolic ‘kissing of hands’ will take place. A photograph of Ms Truss with Her Majesty is expected to be released soon afterwards.

Buckingham Palace has already said this appointment will follow the pattern of all the others in The Queen’s reign meaning it is unlikely that the Prince of Wales will join Her Majesty at the meeting.
