Sussex Instagram breaks record

The new Instagram account of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has broken a record.

The account amassed one million followers in just six hours; it is the quickest account to hit the million mark in the platform’s history, according to reporter Benjamin Wareing.

The previous record holder was South Korean celebrity, Kang Daniel, who hit the one million mark in January of this year in 11 hours and 36 minutes. The Sussexes’ account beat the record by six hours.

The Guinness World Records has not yet confirmed that the Duke and Duchess have broken Daniel’s record.

As of midnight, the couple had 1.5 million followers and counting on their newly established page.

The account @sussexroyal counts celebrities like David Beckham, Blake Lively, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Mindy Kaling amount their followers. Close friends of Meghan, actress Priyanka Chopra, tennis star Serena Williams, and stylist Jessica Mulroney were some of the first followers of the account.

With its launch, the Duke and Duchess said in their first post, “Welcome to our official Instagram; we look forward to sharing the work that drives us, the causes we support, important announcements, and the opportunity to shine a light on key issues. We thank you for your support, and welcome you to @sussexroyal.- Harry & Meghan.”

The post included eight images ranging from their autumn tour and a never before seen image from their visit to Fiji.

Their account follows just 23 accounts consisting of their patronages and other members of the British Royal Family.

Harry’s cousin, Princess Eugenie posted on her personal account welcoming her family to the social media platform saying, “Welcome cousins.”

No Twitter account has yet been announced for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The separation of Instagram accounts for William and Harry’s families follows the announcement a couple of weeks ago that the families would be splitting households. The Cambridges will retain their Kensington Palace base while the Sussexes will move to Buckingham Palace.
