Don’t worry if you missed the Duchess of Sussex’s baby shower, Saturday Night Live (SNL) in the US has you covered.
The weekly live comedy show on 13 April had a skit spoofing the royal baby shower in the United Kingdom with ‘Prince Harry’ videoing the event for Baby Sussex. ‘The Duchess of Sussex’ does not feature in this skit, but the ‘Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’, ‘Prince of Wales’, ‘James Cordon’ and ‘The Queen’ all do.
Set at “The Duke and Duchess’ Estate”, the six-minute skit opens with Harry talking to the camera calling himself the “Ginger of Windsor” and “Red Head Redemption Two”.
“I am making this video for you my future child to watch when you’re older. We are going to do a private birth for you, keeping it low key, but we are having a big baby shower. And I wanted you to come out to see all the people who came to celebrate you,” comedian Mikey Day says pretending to be Prince Harry.
Being a comedy skit, the stereotypes of members of the Royal Family were on full display with Prince Charles (Beck Bennett) being stiff while saying to his future grandchild, “uh hello.”
The video features Harry attempting to avoid James Cordon (Aidy Bryant) and hide the camera anytime he pops up. Harry also tells his future child that he gets to meet his uncle, William, who he had tricked into thinking the baby shower was 80s themed…meaning William (Alex Moffat) is dressed as Queen lead singer, Freddie Mercury while everyone else is in proper attire.
The Duchess of Cambridge (Cecily Strong) appears to deny a rift between her and Meghan, and Prince Harry later finds The Queen (Kate McKinnon) buried under a mound of gifts. The latter results in Charles rushing in saying, “What happened? Am I King?!” When Harry replies that she’s fine, he says, “Oh good,” while looking disappointed.
The Queen tells her future great-grandchild that she already loves them “with all her heart” adding that even though they are American making them “half traitor,” a joke, of course, relating to the American Revolution.
Of course, the SNL skit was all in good fun as anticipation mounts for the arrival of Baby Sussex.
