A rare royal hug for a Meghan Markle fan

Hugs are rarely doled out by a member of the Royal Family, but Meghan Markle could help herself yesterday when meeting a co-founder of Social Bite.

During the visit that took Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Social Bite, a charity which donated over 100,000 food and hot beverage items to the homeless each year, Meghan spoke with charity co-founder Alice Thompson.

Meghan and Alice share a passion for women’s rights and Alice revealed that she was moved by Meghan’s 2015 speech at the UN Women’s conference.

Royal reporter, Omid Scobie tweeted out: “Meghan shared a special moment with @SocialBite_ co-founder @AliceThommo, who admitted she had been deeply inspired by her 2015 @UN_Women speech.

“Clearly touched (and a little emotional), Meghan embraced her in a hug.”

While at Social Bite, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle looked laid back when chatting to employees.

Discussing the homeless problem across the UK, Harry said: “Everyone can be so focused on the wrong things. But… lift your head up and look around you. Walk around your city, see how many people are on the streets and do something to help them.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are doing, everyone can give back.”

Issues surrounding the homeless in Windsor, the site of Harry and Meghan’s May wedding, have been raised by local councillors.

The Windsor and Maidenhead Council has come up with a “robust strategy” to reduce the number of rough sleepers by the end of March. The proposal includes a £100 fine for leaving bedding in a public space and for begging.

Last month, leader Simon Dudley suggested that the homeless put Windsor in a “sadly unfavourable light” when the world will turn their eyes to the town to watch the wedding of the year.

After surveying a vote of no confidence, the council is working on a way to get Windsor’s approximately 14 long-term homeless people off the street by May according to the Evening Standard.

One proposal includes a 56-day window to help them find accommodation and support for mental health or addiction problems.
