In a new interview with Australia’s “The Project”, tennis ace Serena Williams explained that she can always count on the Duchess of Sussex to have her back. The two are frequently in touch with Williams revealing that “we were actually just texting each other this morning.”
The two are believed to have first met in 2010 and they’ve both shared that their bond has grown over the years. Williams said: “we have known each other for a long time, but we really are relying on each other a lot recently.”
Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder and executive chairman Alexis Ohanian, attended the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle in May this year and she spoke about the lasting impact of the “historic” day.
Williams said: “To have such a monumental moment in England, nonetheless of all the places, I felt like we were literally watching history.”
She added: “I feel like in a few years we are going to look back at that moment and it’s going to be so historic. It’s going to be something that people never forget. The whole service was really wonderful, and most of all I just wanted to see my friend be happy. And I think that’s what happened.”
Since the wedding, Williams has been seen attending a polo match with the Duchess of Sussex – in which the Duke of Sussex was playing – and the Duchess watched Williams compete in the Wimbledon Women’s Singles Final in July against Angelique Kerber. Seated in the royal box alongside avid tennis fan the Duchess of Cambridge, the Duchess of Sussex’s delight in her friend’s efforts was evident as she cheered Williams on. Sadly, the two friends were unable to celebrate a win as Kerber edged out Williams for her third Grand Slam singles title, 6–3, 6–3.
Williams also spoke about her relationship with the Duchess following Wimbledon, saying: “We’ve always had a wonderful friendship and every year for a couple years she comes out to Wimbledon, has supported me. Now, she’s supporting me in a different role.”
