Royal thanks flood in as the Commonwealth Games draw to a close

The Earl of Wessex has led the Royal Family in thanking all those involved in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The competition, which comes to an end on August 8th, has seen hundreds of thousands of people enjoy world class sport in a wide range of events over the past ten days.

The Earl, who is Vice Patron of Commonwealth Sport, thanked volunteers and organisers in a series of meetings as the Games moved towards their close.

Prince Edward met dozens of volunteers on his latest visit to the Sandwell Aquatics Centre where the diving contests continued. He was welcomed there by Gurpreet Bhatia, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands, and spent time chatting to many of those who have helped the Games run smoothly.

He also visited the Commonwealth Games Operation Centre to hear about the work that’s gone on to ensure the competition went ahead.

The Earl of Wessex, who has attended dozens of events over the course of the Games, also saw the cricket contests continue and watched a tense squash doubles semi final.

As part of the penultimate day of the Games, Prince Edward also attended a reception hosted by the Governor of Victoria, Australia were the 2026 Games will be held. He met representatives of the four Traditional Owner groups who will be hosting the competition.

Meanwhile, there was a thank you message to all those involved in the Birmingham Games on the official Royal Family Instagram account.

The Prince of Wales officially opened the Games on behalf of The Queen on July 29th 2022.
