Royal Family shares rare cockpit photo from King’s flight – and there’s an unexpected guest on board

The Royal Family has shared a rare glimpse inside the cockpit of the aircraft carrying The King to the Caribbean, revealing an unexpected travelling companion with a deeply touching story.

A photograph posted on the Royal Family’s official Instagram account shows a pilot at the controls of the aircraft, surrounded by the array of switches, screens and instruments used to operate the plane.

Joining the pilots was Geoffrey the Giraffe, whose travels help raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

But behind Geoffrey’s adventures is a poignant story of remembrance, as the toy was the favourite of a young girl, Louise Conway, who died on 9 February 2013.

Geoffrey now represents Louise wherever he travels, helping to keep her memory alive while raising awareness of the needs of children and families receiving care at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

A rare glimpse inside the King’s aircraft

The cockpit photograph was shared as The King travelled from London to Nassau to begin his nine-day Caribbean tour.

The image offers an unusual perspective on the flight deck of an aircraft carrying the Sovereign, with the pilot wearing a headset and operating the controls.

Alongside the photograph, the Royal Family explained that The King likes to spend time travelling by reading briefing papers, continuing his Government red box duties, reading and writing correspondence, and discussing projects with his support team.

However, it was the presence of Geoffrey the Giraffe that gave the photograph its particularly heartwarming detail.

The Royal Family explained that Geoffrey’s travels help raise funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital, bringing attention to the charitable cause during journeys to destinations around the world.

The touching story behind Geoffrey the Giraffe

Geoffrey’s adventures are dedicated to the memory of Louise Conway, whose favourite toy was the giraffe.

Louise died on 9 February 2013, but Geoffrey has since become a way of keeping her memory alive while supporting other children and their families.

According to the story behind the project, Geoffrey represents Louise in everything he does, with photographs of Louise sometimes accompanying the toy on his travels.

Together, they have visited destinations around the world, travelled aboard a variety of aircraft and met people who have helped spread their message.

The initiative encourages supporters to take their own Geoffrey the Giraffe on their travels, sharing photographs and videos of their adventures to raise awareness of the cause.

The aim is to highlight the work of Great Ormond Street Hospital and the continuing need to raise funds to support children receiving specialist treatment, as well as their families.

By inviting people to share their own journeys with Geoffrey, the project has turned a much-loved childhood toy into a travelling ambassador for a cause that remains deeply personal.

The King’s Caribbean tour began in the Bahamas on Tuesday, 27 October, and will continue in Guyana before concluding in Antigua and Barbuda, where Queen Camilla will join him for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

As The King undertakes a busy programme of engagements across the region, Geoffrey’s place in the cockpit offers a touching reminder of the personal stories and charitable causes that can travel alongside him.
