Revealed: First photo of Kristen Stewart as Diana

The first photo of American actress Kristen Stewart as Diana, Princess of Wales has been released for the upcoming feature film by Pablo Larraín, SPENCER.

The film focuses on one weekend in Diana’s life as she decides to separate from the Prince of Wales. It is set on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk while the Royal Family celebrates Christmas in December 1991.

Along with the publication of the first photo, Neon shared a short description of the film: “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold. Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.

Principal photography has begun for the film and will take place in Germany and the UK. Directed by Larraín, it is written by Steven Knight and produced Juan de Dios Larraín for Fabula Films, BAFTA award winner and Academy Award nominee Paul Webster for Shoebox Films and Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski for Komplizen Film.

About the film, Kristen Stewart said: “SPENCER is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life. It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name; Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.

Stewart is known for her role as Bella Swan in the Twilight franchise and lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman. Other cast members of SPENCER include Timothy Spall, Sally Hawkins and Sean Harris.

It is expected that the film will debut in the autumn of 2021.
