An urgent investigation has been launched by Heathrow Airport after a memory stick containing details of The Queen’s security details was found by a homeless person on the streets.
The unencrypted USB stick contained 76 folders worth of documents, maps and restricted material which if ended up in the wrong hands could have caused a serious incident.
According to the Sunday Mirror, a homeless man who found the USB drive on the street was alarmed when after plugging it into a library computer, he discovered the information.
The Queen and other dignitaries’ security arrangements were enclosed on the memory stick, which also included the routes Her Majesty takes when travelling to Heathrow Airport.
Police fear that the material and information contained on the drive may now have already been copied and circulated on the dark web – where criminals access information.
A spokesperson for Heathrow Airport said: “Heathrow’s top priority is the safety and security of our passengers and colleagues.
“The UK and Heathrow have some of the most robust aviation security measures in the world, and we remain vigilant to evolving threats by updating our procedures on a daily basis.
“We have reviewed all of our security plans and are confident that Heathrow remains secure.
“We have also launched an internal investigation to understand how this happened and are taking steps to prevent a similar occurrence in future.”
