The Queen makes two new appointments to the Order of the Thistle

Fresh from her Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Her Majesty The Queen has made two new appointments to the Order of the Thistle, the highest honour in Scotland.

One of the appointments is The Right Honorable Dame Elish Angiolini QC. Born in 1960, Elish is a Scottish lawyer who served as Lord Advocate of Scotland between 2006 and 2011. She was the first woman to hold the post. She was also the first woman to be Solicitor General of Scotland, a role she held between 2001 and 2006 and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2011.

In November 2021, it was announced Dame Elish Angiolini would lead the independent inquiry into the murder of Sarah Everard.

The second appointment is The Right Honourable Sir George Reid. Born in 1939, the Scottish politician was knighted in 2012 for his services to Scottish politics and public life. In 2008, Sir George was appointed Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. He was Lord Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire from 2011 to 2014.

Sir George has worked for 14 years in disasters and conflicts worldwide as the Director of Public Affairs of the International Red Cross, and Red Crescent in Geneva. Currently, Sir George is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Professorial Teaching Fellow at the University of Stirling.

Revived by King James VII, the Order has a complement of 16 Knights. The 16 Knights recognise Scottish men and women who have contributed in a particular way to national life, or who have held public office.

The latest appointments are effective from Friday 10th June 2022.
