Queen Elizabeth II

The Queen is joined by all four of her children for the first day of Royal Ascot

Her Majesty The Queen was joined by all four of her children on Tuesday at Royal Ascot for the start of the five-day racing meeting.

The 93-year-old Monarch ensured that all of her children took part in the carriage procession at the racecourse with the threat of rain not being enough to disrupt events.

Joining The Queen in the first carriage was the Duke of York. Their Majesties the King and Queen of the Netherlands were also in the first carriage alongside The Queen and Prince Andrew as special guests.

Following Their Majesties were the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. Sat beside Prince Charles was the Duke of Cambridge, while the Duchess sat next to Camilla.

In the third carriage was the Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Edward and Sophie celebrate 20 years of marriage on Wednesday, so Royal Ascot no doubt proved to be part of the celebrations.

Royal Ascot’s very history is tied in with royalty. The event was first opened by Queen Anne in 1711, and is now attended every year by Queen Elizabeth II and other members of the Royal Family.

It’s one of the most important dates on the calendar for any fan of horseracing, fashion and royalty. Spectators enjoy the style and theatre of the show as much as the racing, and the rich history of the event gives a sense of true British culture.

Each race day begins with the royal procession, a horse-drawn ceremony in which members of the Royal Family process along the lap and through the Parade Ring before taking their place in the Royal Enclosure.

She is joined by different members of her family each day in the carriage procession, as well as friends and members of staff.
