The Queen and Princess Anne visit Skypark to learn about space technology

The Princess Royal has now joined The Queen in Scotland for Royal Week, and they are completing a whirlwind schedule of engagements. After visiting a community green space in west Glasgow earlier today, they continued on to Skypark to meet with two different companies who are leading in space technology.

The pair first met with AAC Clyde Space. The company specialises in developing advanced satellites that are used for environmental monitoring, weather forecasting, and oceanic and sea-based surveillance. The Queen was impressed by the technology, saying “This is an interesting new field”. While at AAC Clyde Space, The Queen and The Princess toured the production facilities, and met with several representatives from the UK Space Agency.

The Queen and The Princess Royal next visited Spire Global’s offices at Skypark. The company works on space-based data, space services, and analytics. They were met by co-founder and Vice President of Engineering Space Services, Joel Spark, and Senior Project Manager, Dr. Hina Khan. Spire employees demonstrated how the data is collected and used to solve several real-world issues. The technology is currently being used for several different purposes, including developing different renewable energy sources, GPS maritime navigation, and weather forecasting.

The company is happy to have the visiting royals highlight their work. As reported in Business Wire, Spark said “It was an honour to welcome Her Majesty and Her Royal Highness, where we were able to demonstrate the benefits of our technology and how these cutting-edge capabilities are used to better inform our understanding of the world. At a critical time for our planet, continuous technological advancements are needed to tackle the impending threats posed by climate change. The space industry in Scotland, and across the wider UK, has ambitious targets for growth over the coming decade. At Spire Global, we are determined to play our part in realising those ambitions.”

Throughout Royal Week, the Royal Family has been visiting different communities, companies, and organisations in Scotland to highlight the work that they are doing in many different areas.
