Queen Elizabeth II

The military heroes and community champions who will be at The Queen’s funeral

Military and community heroes will make up part of the guestlist for Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral.

Buckingham Palace announced in its State Funeral details that “the Orders of Chivalry including recipients of the Victoria Cross and George Cross…” will be in attendance alongside other government, church and state leaders.

The Victoria Cross, named after the sovereign who created it, is the highest British honour that can be presented to a person. First introduced in 1856, it has been presented 1,358 times. Offered initially to both military and civilian personnel, since 1879, it has exclusively been presented to military personnel. Its inscription reads ‘For Valour.’

The George Cross was named after George VI, who introduced it in 1940. It is presented to military and civilian personnel who show acts of heroism or courage in extremely dangerous situations, though not in the presence of an enemy. Its inscription reads ‘For Gallantry.’

Three times the George Cross has been presented to collectives: the National Health Service, the Royal Ulster Constabulary, and the country of Malta, for its brave citizens who fought in the Second World War.

All living recipients have been invited to attend the late Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. An association formed for those who have received either the Victoria Cross or the George Cross told reporters that 17 of the 23 living recipients would be in attendance, and representatives on behalf of Malta, the NHS and the Royal Ulster Constabulary are included.

Major Peter Norton told the Evening Standard that “being awarded the George Cross by her was the greatest of honours, and it was subsequently a privilege and joy to have met her on so many occasions.”

C/Sgt Johnson Beharry, who was awarded the Victoria Cross, said: “Pinning upon me the Victoria Cross is among the fondest memories that I will hold very closely to my heart.

“I feel very humble and honoured and indeed fortunate to be included in her funeral procession.”

In addition, Buckingham Palace announced the following: “Almost 200 people who were recognised in The Queen’s Birthday Honours earlier this year will also join the congregation, including those who made extraordinary contributions to the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and have volunteered in their local communities.”
