Queen Elizabeth II

The King spend the day in private to remember his mother and grandfather on poignant anniversary

The King is spending the day privately as the UK marks an important anniversary in the history of the monarchy.

On February 6th 1952, The King’s grandfather, King George VI, died at Sandringham.

The then Princess Elizabeth saw her accession to the throne – the start of a historic 70 year reign.

This is the first time the Accession Day of Queen Elizabeth has been marked since the late monarch’s death in September 2022.

The Queen always marked the day privately, reflecting on the life of her father.

Likewise, King Charles and his family are not carrying out any public engagements.

King Charles II is only a few months into his reign. His mother’s 70 years saw many records broken in a truly historic period.

In 2015, she became Britain’s longest reigning monarch, surpassing the record of Queen Victoria.

2016 saw her become the world’s oldest monarch following the death of the Thai King.

And, in November 2017, Queen Elizabeth became the world’s oldest head of state following the resignation of Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe.

Elizabeth II was the only British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.

During her reign, 15 Prime Ministers have been in office: Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Harold Macmillan, Alec Douglas-Holme, Harold Wilson, Ted Heath, James Callaghan, Margaret Thatcher, John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron Theresa May, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.

The Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla will take place on May 6.
