To help celebrate the Queen’s upcoming 90th birthday, senior royals have sat down with ITV for a special documentary, Our Queen at 90.
Members of the royal family, including Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, the Countess of Wessex, and Peter Phillips, are featured in the documentary, which will air on 27 March.
Notably, this is the first solo television interview given by the Duchess of Cambridge. In clips released ahead of the special, she talks about the relationship between the Queen and Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
“She always leaves a little gift or something in their room when we go and stay and that just shows her love for her family,” says the Duchess, who also revealed that Prince George refers to his great-grandmother as simply Gan-Gan.
The Duchess says her most memorable engagement was the day she spent in Leicester with the Queen in 2012, during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
“She was very supportive. The fact she took the time to make sure that I was happy and looked after for that particular occasion, which probably in everything that she’s doing is a very small element, it shows just how caring she is really.”
Other royals offer insight into the Queen as a mother, grandmother, and monarch.
Prince William talks about the public reaction to the Queen, saying, “I’ve seen people literally faint in front of her. It’s quite a startling moment as to what to do when you faint in front of the Queen.”
Aside from the Queen’s many public duties, Princess Eugenie reveals more about the Queen’s private life, and her escape to Balmoral in Scotland.
“It’s the most beautiful place on Earth. I think Granny is the most happy there, I think she really, really loves the Highlands…walks, picnics, dogs, a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs, and people coming in and out all the time. Family-wise we’re all there, so it’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be – for us to come and see them up there where you just have room to breathe and run.”
Prince Charles jokes that “I said to my mother the other day, do you realise that when you reach 90 I shall have known you for 68 years, she had to laugh a little bit.”
He also touched upon her decades of service to the crown, saying, “When you think that all these years the Queen has been on the throne, that in itself is a huge achievement, coping with so many different challenges and complications and always being there really in that remarkable way – steadfast.”
Our Queen at 90 airs on Easter Sunday, 27 March at 8:00 pm.
