For or against? Should Dame Anna Wintour have removed her sunglasses when meeting The Queen?

Yesterday, The Queen made a surprise appearance at London Fashion Week where she sat front row next to Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Dame Anna Wintour.

Many were quick to point out that Dame Anna did not remove her sunglasses when meeting Her Majesty. Was this a breach in protocol or nothing to fuss over? Here are two opinions:

Yes, she should have- by Jamie Samhan

From the time we are young, we are taught basic manners, sit up straight, chew with your mouth closed and look someone in the eyes when speaking to them. As Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour should know these better than anyone, nor should she be excused.

I’m sure her table manners are top notch, but no matter if she is meeting The Queen (as she did yesterday), or anyone else, removing her sunglasses is polite. Plain and simple.

If the fashion show was outside and the sun was shining, I could excuse this. It wasn’t though; they were inside.

Dame Anna has previously mentioned that she wears her sunglasses as an “armour” against being bored. Even if this fashion show was boring, she was seated next to The Queen and should have faked any sense of excitement that she may have been lacking.

It doesn’t need to be a lengthy debate, common courtesy extends to everyone, even if you are Editor-in-Chief of the most popular fashion magazines.

No, she shouldn’t- by Charlie Proctor

I should imagine asking Dame Anna Wintour to remove her sunglasses is rather like asking James Cordon to be mildly entertaining – it is fruitless and won’t happen.

Along with her trademark bob haircut is her trusty pair of sunglasses that the fashion mogul is rarely pictured without.

Speaking of the accessory in the past, Dame Anna said: “They [the sunglasses] are seriously useful. I can sit in a show, and if I am bored out of my mind, nobody will notice. At this point, they have become, really, armour.”

So, the sunglasses appear to be a way for the Vogue editor to conceal her emotions at catwalk shows.

But let’s not forget, it is also possible that they are prescription glasses that have to be worn in lit environments.

Dame Anna clearly thought that this was an occasion where she did not need to remove her sunglasses for whatever reason, despite being in the presence of The Queen.

I say, why the fuss? She is doing her job and is showing no disrespect to the Monarch.

The two are pictured chatting to each other, and the 91-year-monarch even manages to get a smile from The Queen of fashion.

If The Queen wasn’t offended, then people sitting on keyboards hundreds of miles away should be offended either.

And for those saying sunglasses are outdoor accessories, so are gloves which Her Majesty wore at the show

Despite rumours, Dame Anna’s sunglasses are not glued onto her head. In fact, she removed them on Monday night at a fashion reception hosted by the Duchess of Cambridge and Countess of Wessex at Buckingham Palace.

At the end of the day, medical or not, Anna Wintour’s glasses are her signature look. Next, we’ll be asking Simon Cowell to stop wearing trousers that go up to his neck!
