Platinum Jubilee: The Royal Records broken by Elizabeth II

On 6 February 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will reach her Platinum Jubilee, 70 years on the throne. She is the only British Monarch to reach this milestone. However, this is not the only record that The Queen has broken throughout her reign. 

Oldest British Monarch 

On 21 December 2007, Elizabeth passed her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become the oldest living monarch. Victoria died at the age of 81. 

Oldest Monarch in History 

On 23 January 2015, Elizabeth became the oldest Monarch in history when. His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia died at the age of 90, making The Queen the oldest monarch in recorded history. 

Longest Reign in British History

On 9 September 2015, The Queen surpassed her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, in having the longest reign in British history. Queen Victoria’s reign was 63 years, 216 days. 

Longest Royal Marriage in British History

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip share the record for the longest royal marriage in British history. The couple were married for 73 years, 139 days. They married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, and were parted upon his death on 9 April 2021. 

Most Travelled Monarch

A very modern record, The Queen is the most travelled monarch in British history. In her reign, she has undertaken over 250 official foreign visits. In her travels, she has visited 116 countries, with Canada being her most-visited nation. 

Most Currencies Featuring the Same Individual

Her Majesty holds several Guinness World Records, including the record for most currencies featuring the same individual. Her likeness appears on the currency of 35 different nations; Queen Victoria appeared on the currency of 21 nations. 

One record that she has not yet broken is that of the longest reigning monarch. King Louis XIV of France ruled for 72 years, 110 days; The Queen will reach this milestone in 2024. King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand reigned for 70 years, 126 days and Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein reigned for 70 years, 91 days. The Queen is set to pass both of these monarchs this year before her official Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.
