“A man of great character:” The former King of Greece releases a statement marking Prince Philip’s death

The former King of Greece, King Constantine II, has released a statement of condolence. Prince Philip and Constantine were first cousins once removed; both descended from King George I of Greece.

Constantine released the following statement to the Associated Press.

“Prince Philip was a remarkable man who dedicated his entire life to duty and service for his country and the Commonwealth. My sorrow is even deeper because of our close family ties. He will be deeply missed by all of us. He was a man of great character who will be remembered for his forward-thinking, sharp wit and his constant encouraging support to Queen Elizabeth II.”

Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark to Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenburg, Philip was born on the Greek Island of Corfu. After the family was exiled, he was raised in France and then the United Kingdom. The exiled King of Greece and his wife, Queen Anne-Marie, lived in London for several decades until moving back to Greece in 2015.

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, passed on April 9 2021 at the age of 99.
