Opinion: Top 5 royal Christmas cards of the past decade

Originally published in December 2017, we are republishing this piece in the spirit of the Christmas season:

We are taking a look at our picks for the top five royal Christmas cards of the past decade. In no particular order, we have selected the following:

The 2016 Christmas card of the Prince and Princess of Monaco. It features the couple with their twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques in front of the Christmas tree. A picture of Prince Albert’s beloved mother, Princess Grace hangs in the background. It is a very excellent quality, and the photo is glued to the card and not just printed on as some have done in the past.

The 2014 Christmas card of the Duke and Duchess of Savoia (Aosta). It features a Christmas tree with pictures of each of the Duke’s grandchildren. It is a lovely card, and you can tell how proud he is of his grandchildren to share their photos on the Christmas Card!

All of the Christmas cards from King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are beautiful. Every other year, their two daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía feature alone on the card, while the other years they are pictured with their parents. The special 2014 card featured images from King Felipe’s accession to the Spanish throne after the abdication of his father, King Juan Carlos.

I absolutely loved the card sent out last year by King Albert and Queen Paola of Belgium. It showed the proud great-grandparents with their great-granddaughter, Archduchess Anna Astrid sitting in Paola’s lap. The message is written in all three Belgian languages (French, Dutch and German), as well as Paola’s native language of Italian.

Last, but certainly not least, is the 2015 Christmas card of the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall. The photo, taken by a friend of the couple, features the pair hugging one another while smiling at the camera. It was taken while on their summer holiday in Scotland.
