New initiative to get young people involved in the Platinum Jubilee announced

Buckingham Palace

Students across the United Kingdom are invited to make their mark on the Platinum Jubilee with the launch of two new initiatives.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant, in conjunction with the Ideas Foundation and the Engineering Development Trust, announced its “Commonwealth of Kindness” workshops and sustainable street party initiative to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne.

The Ideas Foundation’s Commonwealth of Kindness project was designed to give kids experience with technology to create digital stories that will be displayed on billboards around the UK. The stories are meant to include “values of diversity, sustainability and kindness,” and winning entries will be displayed near the schools that created them.

The first workshop was launched on 7 March in North Yorkshire, and further events will take place across the UK. Schools participating will be awarded tickets to the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, which takes place on 5 June in London.

Another project that will test students’ creativity and STE(A)M skills is the sustainable street party initiative run by the Engineering Development Trust and the Industrial Cadets, of which The Prince of Wales is patron.

The goal is for young people to think up a local event to celebrate the Jubilee and create a poster outlining the sustainable celebration. Entries will be judged by a team of experts, and selected students will win tickets to the Platinum Jubilee Pageant.

Rosanna Machado, CEO of the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, said that it was “very important” to get young people involved in the Jubilee.

“We want to ensure that the pageant leaves a lasting social and environmental impact, and these initiatives will help teach some valuable creative, sustainable and STE(A)M skills which can be used long into their future,” she said. “We’re thrilled to be working with the Ideas Foundation and Engineering Development Trust on these exciting initiatives.”

Schools that are interested in participating in the Commonwealth of Kindness should contact ideas@ideasfoundation.org.uk by 25 March 2022. Briefs are also available for download on the Ideas Foundation website.

For the Platinum Jubilee Pageant sustainable street party initiative, children can register through their school or individually by visiting the Platinum Jubilee Pageant website.
