Queen Camilla puts her passion for literacy on show with visit to new festival

Queen Camilla has visited the inaugural Braemar Literary Festival near Balmoral Castle.

The inaugural event took place at the Fife Arms Hotel. During the event, Her Majesty met novelist Sebastian Faulks. The British novelist is best known for his historical novels set in France including The Girl at the Lion d’Or, Charlotte Gray, and Birdsong.

Other writers taking part in the festival include Kate Mosse, and food writer Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla.

Her Majesty is known for her love of literature. She holds more than six patronages related to literature and has presented the prestigious Booker Prize in recent years. Queen Camilla also has a book club Instagram account – The Reading Room. The account launched in January 2021 and was inspired by the success of reading lists shared during the global health crisis.

The eighth season of the book club starts 14 October. Her Majesty has chosen The Whalebone Theatre, Dracula, The Book Thief, and City of Girls for the season’s reading list.

In addition to her patronages and book club, Queen Camilla’s love of reading, and her championing of literature have been praised by author Sir Philip Pullman. She’s been known to openly discuss the joy her father brought to her when he read to her every night.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have spent much of the early days of The King’s reign in Scotland following the end of the national mourning period following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
