King Charles III

Eggs thrown at King Charles as he takes part in ancient ceremony

King Charles III has had eggs thrown at him as he arrived at the gates of York for the traditional ceremony welcoming him to the city.

As His Majesty approached Micklegate Bar, where the Monarch always enters York, four eggs were hurled at him by a single protester. The demonstrator was heard to shout that Britain was built on slavery. Police confirmed one person had been arrested.

King Charles didn’t flinch as the eggs came towards him. He was meeting some of the dignitaries welcoming him to the city and continued talking to them and shaking hands as the eggs flew past and then landed on the ground. Security moved in quickly but The King calmly went on with his greetings.

Almost immediately, the crowds began shouting ‘God Save the King’.

Queen Camilla was also present and joined her husband for the traditional welcome ceremony.

The King and Queen have a number of engagements in York today. His Majesty is set to unveil a statue of Queen Elizabeth II during this time in the city.
