King Charles takes on another of Prince Philip’s roles

The King has become Ranger of Windsor Great Park, taking on a role held by his father for seven decades.

His Majesty’s decision to take up the post was announced on November 14th 2022, his 74th birthday.

The Duke of Edinburgh held the position longer than anyone else in history. The post was first established in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

The Ranger of Windsor Great Park offers support and guidance to the Deputy Ranger and the team looking after the land which is one of the oldest landed estates in the country.

Prince Philip was appointed to the role by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. Following his death, in 2021, Her Late Majesty took on the position.

King Charles becomes the eighth Monarch to hold the post following George III, George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria, George V, George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. Other notable royal holders of the post include Prince Albert who took on the role from his wife following their marriage.

As the King’s new role was announced, the Deputy Ranger of Windsor Great Park, Paul Sedgwick, said ”We are honoured to have His Majesty as Ranger of Windsor Great Park, continuing a long tradition of the Sovereign and members of the Royal Family holding this role.”

He added ”His Majesty’s passion and commitment to the natural world will be invaluable as we seek to become a centre of excellence for environmental best practice, preserving and enhancing the Great Park for generations to come.”
