King Charles III has placed his ”dear mama” at the heart of one of the most important international events he has hosted in his reign.
As a reception marking COP27 ended at Buckingham Palace, His Majesty stepped into the gardens to plant a tree as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.
The canopy was set up in 2021 to mark the Platinum Jubilee and has seen millions planting a tree in commemoration of the 70 year reign of Elizabeth II. Following the death of Her Late Majesty, it was decided to continue the project to allow people to plant trees in her memory.
The King planted a lime tree in the shadows of the Palace, in gardens that he played in with his mother when they moved in following her own accession to the throne in 1952.
It was a poignant moment at the end of an important day for His Majesty who welcomed hundreds of politicians, businesspeople, NGO representatives and environmentalists to the Palace for a meeting marking the end of the UK Presidency of COP26 and looking ahead to the new UN Climate Change conference, COP27, which is set to take place in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.
Among those present were Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, John Kerry and Stella McCartney.
