Epsom gears up for a royal occasion, even without The Queen

Buckingham Palace has just confirmed that The Queen will not be in attendance at Epsom Downs Racecourse on Saturday for The Derby.

Her Majesty has limited the number of engagements she is attending in person, and pulled out of a visit to St Paul’s Cathedral on Friday morning due to her ongoing mobility issues.

Her Majesty will choose to watch the occasion from home at Windsor instead of making the journey to Epsom.

Even without The Queen in attendance, Epsom Racecourse is ready for a huge celebration.

On Thursday evening, a beacon was lit in recognition of Her Majesty’s 70 year reign. The main grandstand has also been renamed as the ‘Queen Elizabeth II’ stand.

The Princess Royal will lead the Royal party at Epsom now.

It is unclear which other members of The Royal Family will travel to Epsom Downs for the racing. The Duke & Duchess of Cambridge can be ruled out as they are conducting a series of engagements in Wales.
