The Duchess of Edinburgh is adding a new role to her resume as she becomes patron of Plan International UK.

The news was announced on UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. The Duchess isn’t the first royal to become patron of the organisation. Her late father-in-law, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh held the role from 2015 until his death in April of 2021.

The Duchess has been highly vocal on the issue of women’s rights. It was just last month she visited the Chad-Sudan border to learn about the young women the organisation helps to support. More than 10 million have been forced to leave their Sudan homes with women and children making up a high number of refugees arriving in Chad.

In a statement, Rose Caldwell, CEO of Plan International UK said ”we are delighted that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh has agreed to be the new Patron of Plan International UK.

“Too many girls around the world are unable go to school, feel unsafe, are not in control of their own bodies and are held back by outdated, unfair stereotypes. By becoming our Royal Patron, The Duchess is demonstrating the power of standing with girls around the world, so they can create change in their own lives and beyond.

“We look forward to working with The Duchess to drive forward equality for girls and highlight the issues they face, particularly in times of crisis.”

Plan International UK works with 80 countries to ensure each child is safe and gets an education. In addition, to make sure they are safeguarded from violence and confident their voices are being heard.
