The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall are to undertake a historic visit to the island of Cuba during their Anglo Caribbean tour later this spring.
Their Royal Highnesses will be the first members of the Royal Family to visit the communist country located 90 miles from the United States. No previous travel by the royals (or British prime ministers) have taken place as it has been considered very politically sensitive.
Although not confirmed yet by Clarence House, the Cuban trip was revealed in discussions when the Prince and Duchess visited the UK Supreme Court on Tuesday. The Foreign Office has also not yet commented on the journey.
While speaking to the President of the Supreme Court, Baroness Hale, the Duchess of Cornwall revealed that the couple would also be travelling to Cuba. She remarked that she was looking forward to the venture.
According to Baroness Hale, “They are not only going to the Anglo Caribbean, they are going to Cuba as well.
“She is very much looking forward to going to Cuba.”
“It will be quite an event for members of the Royal Family to visit Cuba,” she continued.
The Duchess went on to praise the music and architecture of the island but stopped short when it came to Cuban food.
“She said she loved the music and was interested in the architecture. And she did make a remark about she wasn’t so sure about the food,” the Baroness revealed.
Rumours of a Cuban visit started swirling in November, after the Prince of Wales met with the President of Cuba, Miguel DÃaz-Canel (who assumed office in April 2018) at Clarence House. However, there was no sort of confirmation until the remarks by Her Royal Highness yesterday.
Other details of the upcoming tour have not yet been revealed.
