Camilla, Queen of hats

When it comes to headwear, the Duchess of Cornwall never disappoints. Her love of oversized, wide-brimmed hats trimmed with festive feathers, flowers, and swirls always makes for an interesting headpiece moment. She is certainly not afraid to “go for it” and in my opinion, the bigger, the better when it comes to hats.

Let’s take a look back at some of Camilla’s best hat moments over the years.

Arriving at the July 2011 royal wedding in Edinburgh, the duchess sported one of her most fanciful creations – and one of my personal favourites. Comprised of sprays of feathers and flowers, it’s more like a floral crown than a hat and seems to be growing out of her head like a garden (but in a really interesting way!). The pink shade of the flowers also ties in perfectly with the pink stone on one of her frequently worn pearl chokers.

A mint green oversized hat with spirals in the same shade as her outfit was the perfect look for a day out at Royal Ascot. The summery green colour looks especially lovely on her and I love the asymmetric shape of the hat with the lifted brim and the spirals underneath.

With one of the largest flowers I’ve ever seen on a hat, this candy pink topper was a real show-stopper during 2016’s Royal Ascot festivities. I love a statement hat like this, and she went with a full-on pink theme, extending the colour from her hat to her coat, dress, and again, the same pearl-and-pink choker.

Going along with the “massive pink flower” theme, we have the Philip Treacy hat Camilla wore to 2018’s royal wedding. Paired with that familiar choker, this hat was fashioned out of loads of feathers and worn on a slant to resemble a large flower. It’s definitely not for everyone but I thought it was fantastic and festive for a happy occasion.

Wearing a beautiful shade of pale blue, Camilla looked fresh and happy during 2018’s Trooping the Colour events. Her blue Philip Treacy hat featured baby blue swirls and curls and matched her carriage-mate, the Duchess of Cambridge, too. Props for the colour coordination, ladies.

The duchess, who serves as Lady Sponsor of the new aircraft carrier, departed from her usual oversized hat whilst attending this official commissioning ceremony. She sported a striking icy blue doughnut style hat with a very clean, minimal look for the occasion. I enjoyed seeing something different from Camilla here and it was very appropriate for the occasion.
