Kate and Harry crowned by Brits as top female and male royal fashion icons in new survey

People around the world have been inspired by the styles of Britain’s Royal Family for decades, whether it’s copying Diana, Princess of Wales’s pie crust collars or the Duchess of Cambridge’s Breton stripe tops. And now new research from London’s Fashion Retail Academy has revealed Kate rated as the most popular royal fashion icon.

When asked to choose Kate, Meghan, The Queen, Prince Harry, or Prince William, the majority pulled for Kate, with 47.8% of the vote in the recently conducted survey. Meghan garnered 20.1% of votes, with The Queen ranking the third most stylish female.

Prince Harry has been named the most stylish royal man, with 14% of Brits selecting him, whilst 11% of respondents said they were influenced by Prince William’s more structured style

In terms of age groups, Kate is just as popular amongst different generations, whereas Meghan’s influence predominantly lies with those under the age of 45, with less than 10% of the over 55’s admitting to being influenced by her style, the research shows.

It’s no shock Her Majesty beat Meghan in the 55+ age group, but surprisingly, one in ten 18 to 24-year-olds said The Queen influences their style the most.

For the men, William comes up on top with the older generation, but Harry prevails with the 18 to 24-year-olds, getting a much higher amount of votes (18.4%) from fans as William (6.3%).

The data also shows that almost a fifth (19%) of Brits are influenced by royal style, and the same percentage of men are influenced as women.

Commenting on the new research, Lee Lucas, principal and CEO of the Fashion Retail Academy, said: “Meghan may have commanded more column inches recently, but it is Kate who has emerged as the royal leading the fashion stakes by a country mile. In addition to well-known designers, both duchesses have been seen wearing high street names such as Zara, Topshop, and Marks & Spencer, which immediately makes them more relatable to the British public and their fashion choices more accessible.”

The Fashion Retail Academy is an employer-led college supported by and working closely with over 140 fashion brands. It was founded in 2005 with investment from the retail industry that was matched by the government and it has recently been judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted.
