Buckingham Palace hiring staff to write letters on behalf of the King and Queen

King Charles and Queen Camilla greet crowds

A fascinating new vacancy at Buckingham Palace has offered a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes work involved in handling the thousands of letters sent to members of the Royal Family each year.

The Royal Household is recruiting a Correspondence Officer to work in the Records section of the Private Secretary’s Office at Buckingham Palace.

The successful applicant will be responsible for responding to correspondence sent to the King, the Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales, with the job advert highlighting the importance of ensuring that members of the public receive a “thoughtful, timely and well-crafted response”.

The fixed-term position will run from December 2026 until December 2027, with a starting salary of between £28,860 and £31,024.50 a year.

The role is full-time, with employees working 37.5 hours a week from Monday to Friday.

The vacancy provides an unusual insight into how correspondence from the public is handled inside the Royal Household.

The successful candidate will take responsibility for their own portfolio of correspondence and projects, responding to letters covering a wide range of social, community and national issues.

They will be expected to draft letters which are clear, sensitive and appropriate to the subject matter, while reflecting the tone and values of the Royal Household.

The advert says the role involves “drafting a letter that someone will always remember”.

Correspondence officers will also liaise with the Private Office, other departments within the Royal Household and external organisations, including government agencies.

They will help develop and maintain standard and bespoke response templates to ensure consistency across the correspondence operation.

The Royal Household says that thousands of letters are written to the King, the Queen, and the Prince and Princess of Wales every year.

The successful candidate will therefore play a role in ensuring that this correspondence is dealt with efficiently.

Their duties will include helping to open, sort and log incoming mail before it is distributed to the appropriate teams.

They will also assist with data entry and tracking figures relating to the correspondence operation.

The Correspondence Officer will also manage correspondence relating to seasonal events, deal with public and commercial gifts and track parcels arriving for the Royal Household.

The Royal Household says they are looking for someone with strong written communication skills and experience drafting clear, succinct and sensitive letters, including responses to complex or topical issues.

The successful applicant will need to remain calm while dealing with a high volume of work and be capable of prioritising competing deadlines.

Applications for the position close at 11.55pm on October 18, 2026. Click here if you are interested in applying.
