The King is hiring a new chef to work at Buckingham Palace! Here is how to apply

Buckingham Palace

A rare opportunity has arisen to join one of the most prestigious culinary teams in the country, as Buckingham Palace announces a vacancy for a sous chef within the Royal Household.

The successful candidate will join the Catering Branch of the Master of the Household’s Office, working full time – up to 45 hours per week across five out of seven days, including some weekends. Based primarily at Buckingham Palace, the role also includes travel to other royal residences throughout the year.

Described as “a career unlike any other”, the position promises a unique blend of culinary leadership, innovation, and tradition, with duties ranging from preparing meals for royal events to staff lunches. The postholder will work alongside a highly accomplished kitchen team, using the finest seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, and will play a key role in menu planning, food production, and the development of junior chefs.

Candidates must hold a City and Guilds qualification, or equivalent, and have substantial experience in a five-star or premier catering environment, including recent work at junior sous or sous chef level. They must demonstrate strong leadership, versatility across all kitchen sections – larder, veg, sauce, and pastry – and a deep commitment to service excellence. Organisational skills, a thorough understanding of health and safety standards, and effective communication are also essential.

The Royal Household offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 25 days of annual leave, rising to 30 with service, plus bank holidays. Employees benefit from a 15 per cent non-contributory pension scheme, complimentary lunches while on duty, and various discounts, including 20 per cent off Royal Collection Trust shops and free admission to royal residences. Additional support includes parental leave, volunteering days, and wellbeing initiatives.

The Palace also emphasises a commitment to work-life balance, with rotas typically planned four weeks in advance, regular weekends off, and time off in lieu for travel.
